Being an Environmentally responsible department, the Public Works Building & NH Department has decided to construct all important government buildings above 2500 sq.m in area as Green Buildings.
A green building depletes the natural resources to a minimum during its construction and operation. The aim of a green building design is to minimize the demand on non-renewable resources, maximize the utilization efficiency of these resources when in use, and maximize the reuse, recycling, and utilization of renewable resources.
Green buildings generate lesser pollution both during construction as well as while in use. Green buildings ensure proper safety, health and sanitation. It provides facilities for the labourers (during construction) and the occupants (while in use). Green buildings restrict the use of high ODP (ozone depleting potential) substances in their systems as well as in finishes.
The department is developing roof top solar power system to reduce dependence on conventional energy sources.
Projects generating more than 10 KLD wastewater are treated before discharge/ reuse. Natural systems with zero energy footprint based on soil biotechnology are being introduced.
New building materials like Cellular Light Concrete, Autoclaved Aerated Concrete Blocks (AAC blocks) are being used to reduce the carbon footprint.
ECBC 2007 is made mandatory to reduce electrical energy consumption.
